Great deal on a full size

I needed a car for a weekend trip and was looking for the best price. Found a full size car through Alamo that was significantly cheaper than other places. I pre-paid to save a bit more, which worked out well. The car itself, a Chevrolet Malibu, was perfectly fine, clean, and got me where I needed to go. Felt like I got good value for my money, especially since I was on a tighter budget for this trip. The process was straightforward, too.

Good car, easy pickup

Rented a compact SUV for my trip. Pickup at the airport was quick, no hassle. Car was clean and ran well. Return was also simple. Would use them again.

Decent value, small issue

I rented a Toyota Corolla for a week-long business trip. The car itself was fine, good on gas, and the price was competitive. Pickup at the SFO location was pretty smooth, didn't take too long. My only real gripe was the GPS navigation unit I added on. It was a bit outdated, and sometimes slow to react. For the extra cost, I expected something a little more modern. But overall, a solid rental experience.

Can I add my wife as an additional driver for free with Alamo? Or do they charge extra for that?

A Alex C. 3 weeks ago
If she's your spouse, she's usually free! At least that's been my experience in California. They have specific rules about immediate family.

B Brian Anderson 3 weeks ago
I think it depends on the state and if you're an Alamo Insider member. For spouses, it's often included without an extra fee in many places, but always good to confirm.

I'm looking at a full-size SUV for a road trip. Does Alamo typically allow unlimited mileage, or should I be watching out for hidden caps?

E Emily L. 4 weeks ago
Most of their rentals come with unlimited mileage for domestic travel. International is a different story, but for within the US, you should be fine.

Z Zach Parker 4 weeks ago
Unless it's some super special rate, it's usually unlimited mileage. I've never had an issue with it on my longer trips with them.

Anyone know how the 'Skip the Counter' thing works with Alamo? Sounds convenient but wondering if it's a hassle to set up.

P Patricia Scott 1 month ago
It's pretty smooth actually. You do all the paperwork online beforehand, then just go straight to your car. Just gotta make sure you're signed up for Alamo Insiders.

I used it at the airport last month, saved me a ton of time. Just had to flash my ID at the gate and I was out. Definitely recommend.

Does Alamo usually have good deals for military? I'm trying to book for July and saw something about a military discount but wasn't sure if it's worth searching for.

P Patricia Robinson 1 month ago
Yep, they do! My husband always uses it. Just make sure you select the military discount option when you're booking or mention it at the counter.

J Jennifer 1 month ago
Yeah, they offer it. It's usually a pretty decent percentage off, like 5-10% I think. You'll probably need to show your ID when you pick up the car.

I saw Alamo has some specific models like the Ford Mustang convertible. Is it guaranteed you get that exact car or is it just 'or similar'?

R Robert Evans 2 days ago
For specific models like the Mustang, sometimes you can book it directly, but for most car classes, it's usually 'or similar'. I'd call the location to double-check if it's really important.

B Brian Garcia 8 hours ago
Yeah, usually it's a category, not a specific car. So you might get a different convertible. Sometimes you get lucky though!

Thinking of getting a Toyota Corolla from Alamo. What's the deal with their fuel policy? Do I need to fill it up before returning?

P Paul Young 3 weeks ago
You usually have a few options: refill it yourself, pay for a full tank upfront at a reduced rate, or let them refill it for you at a higher per-gallon price. I always just fill it up myself to save money.

N Nathan P. 3 weeks ago
Yeah, pretty standard. Either you fill it or they charge you extra. They'll tell you the options when you pick it up.

Hey, thinking of renting a car with Alamo for my trip to Miami next month. Does anyone know if they allow debit cards for the security deposit or do I absolutely need a credit card?

J Jason N. 1 week ago
I used my debit card with them once, but they put a pretty big hold on it. I think it varies by location and what kind of car you get too.
1
Z Zach Campbell 1 week ago
yeah, they do accept debit cards but they might have some extra hoops like showing proof of a return ticket or a second form of ID. it's probably best to just double-check with the specific branch beforehand to be safe.

Anyone know if the 'prepay and save' discount is actually worth it? Or does it lock you in too much if plans change?

A Amanda Phillips 3 weeks ago
It can save you a good chunk, like up to 25% sometimes. But yeah, you are committed. If you cancel, you might lose a small fee or the whole thing depending on how close to the pickup date you cancel. Read the fine print.

S Sofia 3 weeks ago
I've used it when my plans were super solid. The savings are real, but if there's any chance your trip might get axed, maybe stick with the pay-at-counter option.
